WHY A QUIET PLACE
The film I chose is called A Quiet Place directed by John Krazinski. With its extensive plot and complex characters, it drew my interest right away. The unique idea of making a film almost completely silent is eerie and new. Because there is very little dialogue, every word has a point. In a nutshell, I picked this film because the directing is incredible, and everything has a purpose and makes a point. The main character Lee was even played by the director, so we know the actors definitely know what they are doing. This film has many qualities from its acting and camera shots to its lighting and set. Krazinski was smart and decided to make the cast as small as possible giving each actor more one on one work so that they understand their character thoroughly. Because of the actors understanding of the film, the plot exceeded expectations. Without dialogue, it really makes the audience pay attention and look at the small background details like the newspapers talking about the takeover. Each Camera shot had a purpose. For example, in the second scene while they are on their way back home, there is a bird’s eye view angle showing the distance between the family and the youngest child creating tension and fear for the young boy. Throughout this movie, it makes the audience think and try to understand what is going on without it being handed to them. That leads me into the thing I would change. I believe that they should add more plot behind the aliens. I don’t want too much where you see the aliens as something that you feel sympathy for, but enough so you know where there from. I think this sort of thing shouldn’t be added through dialogue but through something in the background. You’re able to find plenty of information in the newspapers in the background, but the only thing it said about the aliens is that they hunt with sound. Something even more realistic would be a newspaper with a government coverup just like the 1947 Roswell “air balloon crash”. This controversial subject first came out with a newspaper showing an odd-looking crash but the next newspaper was a different picture with a new title. It would show the progression of the fall of the government and tell you what kind of craft the aliens came to earth in. In my adaptation I will be writing from the perspective of the father Lee. I picked him because his character is incredibly developed and obviously has a past of outdoor survival. He has plenty of emotion he doesn’t show because he’s trying to be strong for his family. This brings in the fear of letting people down which will be a big point I make. He is less scared of the aliens and more scared that he won’t be able to save his family. The children have the basic fear of the aliens themselves and the mother is trying to protect her unborn child and keep any more of her children from being killed by the creatures. Lee sacrifices himself, overcoming the fear of death for saving his children. I want to write from my perspective of his emotion and fear because its only really shown through mannerisms in the film. I will add his views on the government |
